The Box Was Never Meant for You

A few weeks ago, I read a post that stopped me in my tracks.

It said that as children, most of us know exactly who we are and have a pretty clear idea of what lights us up. We know what we love. We know what excites us. We know what we are naturally drawn to.

Then life happens.

Little by little, we are influenced by our environment. We are told who we should be, what we should do, what is realistic, what is acceptable, and what is "too much." Without even realizing it, we begin squeezing ourselves into a box that was created by other people's expectations. That was certainly true for me.

Looking back on my childhood, I remember hearing things like:

"You're too much."

"You're too loud."

"You're all over the place."

"You need to focus."

"Stop trying to help people with their problems."

At the time, I didn't realize how deeply those words would shape the way I showed up in the world. Years later, as an adult, I found myself following that same pattern.

About ten years ago, I started a business in network marketing and fitness coaching. I was putting myself out there. I was showing up on social media. I was helping people create healthier habits, routines, and lifestyles. I felt alive. I felt connected to something bigger.

And once again, I was told I was too much. I was told I was embarrassing. Instead of standing taller, I shrunk. Instead of turning up the volume, I went quiet. I climbed right back into the familiar box because it felt safer than disappointing the people around me.

The same thing happened in my career. Every time I started finding my groove, stepping into leadership, or operating in my zone of genius, I was met with resistance. I was held back, minimized, and at times pushed toward the door.

Looking back now, it amazes me how easily we believe the outside noise while questioning the burning desire inside us.

Why is it so much easier to trust someone else's opinion than our own inner knowing?

Over the last few years, I have done a tremendous amount of healing, self-discovery, and reprogramming. And today, I am ready. Ready to invest in myself. Ready to believe in myself. Ready to go all in on myself. Ready to take another leap of faith.

The difference this time? Nobody is getting in my way.

Not because people won't have opinions, but because I no longer hand them the pen to write my story. The people-pleasing box has been burned.

Recently, I've been reading a book called How to Change. One of the concepts it explores is how change becomes easier when we create some level of disruption in our lives.

If you want a body transformation, join a different gym. If you want new ideas, work from a different coffee shop. If you always start your morning the same way, try something new. Go for a walk instead of reaching for your phone.

Small shifts create new patterns. New patterns create new possibilities. And new possibilities create entirely new lives.

The disruption doesn't have to be dramatic. Sometimes the smallest changes create the biggest transformations.

So what am I really getting at?

Life is too short and too precious to spend it living by someone else's expectations. At some point, every one of us must decide:

  • Will we spend our lives protecting other people's comfort? Or will we honour the fire burning inside us?

Because one day, every one of us will reach the end of our story.

The question is whether you'll arrive there with unfulfilled dreams still burning inside you, or with the peace that comes from knowing you lived them.

The choice has always been yours.
